SEASIDE, Calif. --- After day one at the Lady Otter Spring Invitational in Seaside, Calif., No. 4 California Baptist University leads the field with a score of 299.
The Lancers are three strokes up on No. 3 British Columbia and host Cal State Monterey Bay, which are both at 302. British Columbia recently passed CBU in the NAIA Women's Golf Coaches' Top 25 Poll.
“The girls played some good golf today,” said Head Coach Lane Pace. “They came out and played with confidence and that is what I wanted to see. One more day like this and we have a great chance to win.”
CBU leads a field of 19 teams from both the NCAA and NAIA.
Fredrika Winqvist led the Lancers with a two-under score of 71. Winqvist is tied for second individually after the first 18 holes, trailing Cal State San Marcos' Stephanie Cole by only two strokes.
Adriana Niclotti, Shauna Curtis and Nathalie Silva were not far behind their teammate with scores of 74, 76 and 78, respectively. Samantha Katz shot an 87 to round out the field for the Lancers.
“There looks like a chance of bad weather tomorrow so I am happy we are in this position,” said Pace. “I told the girls that it is easier to play from ahead in poor conditions than from behind.”
The final round is a shotgun start scheduled for 8:30 a.m. tomorrow.
