RIVERSIDE, Calif. --- California Baptist University earned a pair of mercy rule victories over Cornerstone University on Thursday at John C. Funk Stadium, with its starting pitchers throwing one- and two-hitters in the doubleheader sweep.
The top-ranked Lancers, who are the defending NAIA champions, improved to 21-0 on the season with the sweep, winning 13-0 and 8-0.
In the opener, the Lancers got a pair of home runs from first baseman Kendall Gorham to jump all over Cornerstone from the start. CBU scored four runs in the first, getting a two-run single from Caty Reeves and a two-run double from Sarah Strong.
In the second, CBU posted a seven-run inning that was highlighted by Gorham's two-run homer to center. She added a two-run shot in the third to deep left-center, giving her 12 on the season.
Nina Cabrales also drove in three runs for the Lancers.
On the mound, the Lancers rode the arms of Emma Holden and Tory Ferreira, who combined on a one-hit shutout. Holden tossed three innings of no-hit ball, allowing just a hit batsman to reach base. Ferreira added two innings of one-hit ball before the game was called after the top of the fifth because of the mercy rule.
In the nightcap, CBU again got another strong effort from a pair of its pitchers, using four shutout innings of two-hit ball from Melanie Ahumada, who struck out eight. Gorham came in to relieve her in the fifth and struck out four in two innings of mop-up duty.
Offensively, the Lancers were paced by Sloan McHann, who hit a two-run homer in the third and added a run-scoring single in the sixth inning.
Cornerstone, which was playing for the first time this season, had just one batter reach third base all evening.
Briana Corral added a two-run homer in the first for CBU, which next plays host to Azusa Pacific in a Golden State Athletic Conference doubleheader on Saturday. First pitch is set for noon.
