RIVERSIDE, Calif. --- No. 14 California Baptist scored early and often, en route to a record breaking 22-8 win over Vanguard, Saturday afternoon.
In the opening minutes the Lancers missed on a 6-on-4 opportunity, but that was the last of the team's offensive woes as CBU bested the previous school record of 21 goals.
The Lancers (9-1) jumped out to a 10-3 lead after the first quarter and never looked back; pushing their current winning streak to nine. Aaron Steiger and Alan Ogden each had 4 goals in limited minutes as the Lancers emptied their bench midway through the second quarter.
Head Coach Rick Rowland, who was unaware of the school record, noted the depth of the team as one of its biggest strengths. “We played 24 people today. It was good to get our guys to play in front of their friends and family,” said Rowland.
Vanguard (4-7) struggled to score against either of the CBU goalies, going scoreless in the 2nd and 3rd quarter. Austen Ramer and Nick Janzen combined for 15 saves, and helped to set up the transition offense.
Israel Perez was one of the few bright spots for the Lions, scoring 4 goals for the first year program.
CBU had a balanced attack, with scores from 10 different players, 6 of which had 2 or more.
The Lancers hope to continue their torrid start as they welcome the 3rd ranked and reigning NCAA Div I champion Trojans of USC to the Lancer Aquatic Center in next weekend's Lancer Invite. The Invite, held next Friday and Saturday, will include 10 programs from the NCAA and NAIA.
