RIVERSIDE, Calif. --- No. 16 California Baptist University fell to No. 1 Southern California 11-7, in the marquee matchup of the Lancer Invite Friday afternoon.
The loss broke the Lancers' (11-2) 10 game win streak while the undefeated Trojans (10-0) continued their quest for a third-straight NCAA Division I championship.
CBU looked timid in the first quarter against the reigning champs, turning the ball over on their first four possessions (15 total) to fall behind 4-0.
Scott Gleason put the Lancers on the board with a fastbreak turn-around goal that awoke the crowd of nearly 400. Unfortunately, there was little for the Lancers to cheer for in the first half as they trailed 10-2, with all signs pointing to a route.
However, the Lancers overcame a messy first half to have a respectable showing against the defending champs.
Chris Toy won the opening sprint to set the tone for the third quarter as CBU matched the Trojans 1-1.
Aaron Steiger, who came off a six goal performance against Fresno-Pacific last night, posted the only Lancer goal of the quarter to set the score at 11-3.
The fourth was all CBU as they mounted a comeback that would prove to be too little too late. Alan Ogden and Steiger led the way with two goals, while Jeremy Atkinson and Gleason each had one of their own.
Nevertheless, defense was key as goalie Austen Ramer held the Trojans to their second lowest scoring total of the season.
“Ramer is one of the better goalies in the country, and he showed that today,” said CBU head coach Rick Rowland.
Ramer had 11 saves, including a 5-meter block, and multiple 1-on-1 fastbreak saves.
“They're the best team in the country. It was good to have a test against them in our house,” said Rowland. “Their coach said that is the most talented team he has ever had…they can go 12 to 16 players deep.”
Had the Lancers cashed in on some prime opportunities, the game could have been even closer.
“We didn't score on our 6-on-5s,” said Rowland after CBU went 0-6 on man-up possessions. “We have to cash in on 50 percent of them to keep it close. We have to execute better.”
In the nightcap CBU executed to near perfection, storming ahead to a 6-1 lead over winless Occidental (0-7) in the opening quarter, before posting a convincing 18-9 victory.
Steiger, the Lancer's leading scorer (43 goals) came out firing, connecting for three in the first. Ogden added two goals against the Tigers to give him 5 on the day.
The Lancers were able to put in every active player, as Occidental never made it close.
“It was good,” said Rowland. “We played the best team in the country, and then we got to play all 25 guys. It was good balance.”
CBU will face Chapman (12 p.m.) and Claremont-Mudd (6 p.m.) tomorrow, in the second day of the Lancer Invite.
