CBU Splits First Day of The Joust

RIVERSIDE--- It was a busy day at the Lancer Aquatics Center on Friday as the #15 California Baptist men's water polo program hosted its annual Joust Tournament, competing in a pair of games while hosting four others. The Lancers split their day after handling Biola well in the morning and then falling to #16 UC Irvine in the evening, moving their record to 9-6 on the season.

CBU started their day strong and secured a decisive 17-9 victory over the Biola Eagles in a game that showcased the Lancers' offensive prowess, highlighted by Hayes Beamon's phenomenal performance, scoring four goals. CBU jumped to an early lead, netting five goals in the first period alone, with Beamon and Collin White leading the charge. Biola trailed significantly after the first quarter, where they managed only one goal compared to CBU's five.

As the match progressed, Biola scored two goals in the second period, but California Baptist maintained a comfortable lead heading into halftime and through the third frame. In the fourth period, the Lancers added five more goals to their tally, solidifying their lead. The Lancers' defense, anchored by goalie Tyler Carlson, who made six saves, effectively stifled Biola's offense.

In the second match of the day for the Lancers, the #16 UC Irvine Anteaters ultimately emerged victorious with a score of 17-11. The two teams have traded wins and losses in exciting games every time this season, and Friday's match was no different. Alex Righetti set the tone early for CBU after scoring a beauty after UCI scored the first goal of the game to knot the game 1-1. From there, it was off to the races for both squads, but UCI built momentum into the second period, scoring six more goals. Although CBU's Rafa Martinez found the net twice in the quarter, it wasn't enough to stave off the offensive attack from the visiting squad.

The Lancers found their rhythm in the third quarter, scoring four goals to UCI's four, narrowing the gap slightly. Kevin Rosa's team would go on to outscore the Anteaters in the fourth period. But it was not enough to come back from the deficit accumulated in the first half.

CBU will now turn its attention to its three games tomorrow as the Joust continues in Riverside. The Lancers will start their morning against Austin College before taking on #7 UC San Diego and ending their day against Concordia University Irvine. CBU's games will be streamed to ESPN+.
