IRVINE, Calif. --- No. 3 California Baptist University continued to dominate the early season tournament circuit Friday, sweeping yet another tourney opening day at the Asics Crowne Plaza Labor Day Tournament hosted by Concordia.
The Lancers defeated both Jamestown (N.D.) and Colorado Christian in straight sets to run their record to 10-0.
The Lancers held Jamestown below 20 points in all three sets of the opening match, defeating the Jimmies 25-15, 25-15, 25-17. Solid defense and scorching offense did the trick for CBU as the team held Jamestown to a .124 attack percentage while hitting .398.
Three Lancers had double-digit kill totals led by Ingrid Carmona with 14. Jessica Kalama had her third double-double of the season ripping 12 kills and recording a match-high 13 digs. Linjun Ji had 10 kills. Nevena Dragovic made a splash in her Lancer debut recording 39 assists against Jamestown.
Jamestown made things close in the third set drawing to within a point of the Lancers, 18-17. CBU, however, rattled off seven straight points to put the match away. Ji and Carmona led the charge to end the match, with each player recording a pair of kills and assisting on a block during the run.
The defense stole the show in the nightcap as CBU held Colorado Christian to just a .038 hitting percentage. The Lancers recorded 36 digs, served seven aces and had a season high nine total blocks. The Cougars were also forced into 22 attacking errors.
CBU showed its dominance in the second set jumping out to a 9-2 lead and finishing things off with four straight points. The third set was the only one in which the Cougars were able to hit better than .000 scoring a match-best 22 points in the game. The Lancers withstood an early charge from Colorado Christian, which took an 8-4 lead to open the set. CBU battled to set point with a 24-19 lead, but the Cougars still had one run left staying alive with three straight points. After a Lancer timeout, Kalama ended the run and the match with a kill.
Kalama, Ji and Carmona once again led the Lancers in kills with 10, nine and nine, respectively. Dragovic ran the offense with 29 assists in her second match.
