IRVINE, Calif. --- Chris Toy put the finishing touches on an impressive day with four goals to lead California Baptist University, ranked No. 20 in the CWPA Coaches' Top 20 Poll, to a 14-7 victory over Fresno Pacific Saturday.
The win over the Sunbirds was the Lancers' second in three matches at the season-opening UC Irvine Invitational. The Lancers also beat Redlands, 12-6, before narrowly falling to No. 5 and tournament-host UC Irvine, 10-9, in the first match of the day.
Toy finished with 11 goals.
In the win over Fresno Pacific, the Lancers jumped out to a 5-1 lead after the first quarter and then led 8-2 at half before coasting in for the win. Aaron Steiger also netted four goals while Brent Troutman and Scott Gleason had two apiece. Austen Ramer nabbed six saves.
Against Redlands, the Lancers used a 5-1 second quarter to blow open a tight game that was tied 3-3 after the first quarter. Toy again tallied four goals and was one of seven Lancers that scored. Peter Hines and Troutman each scored twice.
CBU narrowly pulled off what would have been the biggest win in program history against the host Anteaters. The Lancers trailed 5-2 in the second quarter and took the lead on four different occasions in the second half. Troutman gave the Lancers their final lead, 9-8, with 4:15 left before Kyle Baxter tied the game with 3:40 remaining.
With overtime looming, Nick Pfeil scored with 32 seconds left to lift the Anteaters to the win.
Toy scored three goals, while Steiger had two and finished with seven on the day. Troutman finished with five goals on the day. Ramer tallied 12 saves against UC Irvine.
