HONOLULU, Hawaii --- Tyler Aagard's second-half header off a corner kick proved to be the difference as California Baptist University defeated Chaminade, 2-1, Saturday in a Pacific West Conference game in Honolulu.
The win is the Lancers' second straight as they improve to 8-4 overall, 5-1 PacWest, keeping pace with the conference leaders and in the hunt for the PacWest title.
The Silverswords drop to 0-12-1, 0-8.
"We didn't show a total sharpness that we needed today, and we had to work hard," said CBU Head Coach Ryan Jorden. "We got the travel out of our legs and were able to score first and play from the front, which allowed us to control the tempo. It would have been nice to get the second and third to put a stranglehold on the game, but we didn't get there today."
Marc Hope had two assists in his homecoming.
It seemed like the Lancers might run away with this one as they scored just three minutes in, but despite out-shooting Chaminade, 20-7, they still had to work hard for it.
With the game tied at 1-1 in the 55th minute, Hope played a corner kick into the area. Chaminade keeper Jose Miguel Pena tried to punch it away, but barely got to the ball and flicked it right to where Aagard was waiting. The left back headed in his second goal of the season for what turned out to be the winner.
The Lancers out-shot the Silverswords, 13-1, in the second half alone.
Making his first career start, Mitchell Carter made three saves in getting the win in goal.
Osvaldo Bastida got things started right out of the gate with his fourth goal in the past five games and his fifth of the season in the fourth minute. Hope got to the end line and slotted a ball into the area. Bastida ran onto it and simply touched it into the net, giving the Lancers a 1-0 advantage.
Chaminade equalized in the 38th minute on a Max Gerwalt header.
