KANEOHE, Hawaii --- In one of its most complete performances of the season, California Baptist University scored two first-half goals and never looked back in a 2-0 win at Hawaii Pacific Monday afternoon.
"Yeah, this was probably our most complete performance this year," said CBU Head Coach Ryan Jorden. "It's hard to play on the road, especially against a physical team that is dangerous, and we had a good collective effort and a fairly intelligent performance."
The win is the Lancers' third straight as they improve to 9-4 overall, 6-1 PacWest.
Coming into the game, both CBU and Hawaii Pacific (10-4, 7-2) both had one loss in conference play. The Sea Warriors still lead the conference with 21 points, but they have played two more games than the Lancers (18 points) and three more than Dixie State (18 points).
Alex Anderson scored in the 10th minute, Michael Salazar scored with just a minute left in the half and Joey Pacheco finished with 10 saves, a handful of them either diving or at point-blank range.
"It's always good to pitch a shutout, and Joey was great today," said Jorden. "That's the kind of performance we expect from him all the time. He was commanding. He was verbal. He was sharp. He did a great job leading this group from the back."
Led by Pacheco, the Lancer defense was stifling, keeping the Sea Warriors and Chance Bukoski, who has 12 goals, the second highest total in the PacWest, off the board. Pacheco's 10 saves are just one shy of his season-high of 11 set against Cal State Dominguez Hills in the second game of the year.
With the defense shutting down the Sea Warrior attack, the Lancer offense was able to create a handful of chances, and they capitalized on two of them.
The first one was a result of a beautiful build up from the back. Left back Tyler Aagard played a ball to Osvaldo Bastida down the left side. Bastida played a combination with Tyler Garrison, cut towards the middle of the field and played a curling ball to Jonathan Garcia on the left side. Garcia played a perfect one-timer on the ground to Anderson, who smacked it into the net for a 1-0 Lancer lead.
Then just one minute away from halftime, Cole Schmit played a ball over the top and Salazar ran onto it, headed it past a charging defender then snuck it past Mael Lefebvre and into the net.
"That first goal we scored was terrific," said Jorden. "It was exactly how we like to play. It was a great buildup finished with a great strike. Both chances we took were great."
