JACKSON, Tenn. --- Unfamiliar territory became unfriendly territory Friday morning in Jackson, Tenn., as No. 5 California Baptist University was upset, 64-58, by Shawnee State in the Sweet 16 of the NAIA National Championships.
It was the Lancers second ever trip to the NAIA National Tournament and first ever appearance in the second round. CBU ends its season 27-8, falling one victory short of setting a new program record for wins.
The Lancers went ice cold from the field shooting just 27 percent from the floor and 23 percent from beyond the arc.
“We accomplished several of our game goals, but unfortunately we just couldn't shoot,” said Head Coach John Marcum. “Field goal percentage is usually the biggest stat that dictates winning or losing. We got markedly more shots than they did, but we couldn't finish.”
It was the first time all season the Lancers had shot below 30 percent and comes on the heels of a game where CBU hit 60 percent of its 3-pointers.
Brenna Hahn got the Lancers out to a promising start, draining CBU's second shot of the game from beyond the arc. The Lancers would proceed to miss their next five field goals, en route to an early 8-3 deficit.
S.J. Simmons and V.V. Vasciunaite hit back-to-back threes to briefly give the Lancers a 9-8 lead, which they would stretch to a 12-8 advantage on a three-point play by Dana Olsen.
The Bears responded quickly, with Abby Ballman hitting a 3-pointer on a second chance opportunity after Jill Cropper made 1-of-2 free throws.
Shawnee State used a 7-0 run midway through the first half to open up a 24-17 lead. The Bears would take a 31-27 advantage into the break.
The Lancers attempted 13 more field goals in the opening period and hit 5-of-15 3-pointers. Shawnee hit 4-of-7 threes early and would finish shooting 50 percent from 3-point territory.
The Lancers trailed the entire second half, but cut the lead to two, the lowest it had been since the first half, with 44 seconds remaining in the game.
Vasciunaite hit a jumper to make the score 58-56 and was called for a foul on the ensuing inbounds. Alannah Sheets hit both foul shots to put Shawnee State back up by four.
CBU would score just one more basket the rest of the way, a concession layup with just seconds remaining. The Lancers missed three-straight 3-pointers and the Bears hit three free throws and one field goal to seal the upset.
“In a tournament like this you have to be able to make shots and your best players need to make plays at crucial times, and that didn't happen today,” said Marcum. “Still that doesn't change how proud we are as a staff of this team. These girls put CBU on a path of success, doing a ton of things for the first time and losing that last game doesn't diminish anything they've been able to accomplish this year.”
The Lancers matched the program record for wins and set a new mark for conference victories with 16. CBU won its first ever GSAC Tournament title this season, sealing it's first berth in the NAIA National Tournament since 1982. The Lancers' opening round win over Texas Wesleyan was also a program first.
CBU was led in its final game by two of its seniors, with Olsen scoring 16 points and Hahn posting 15. The Lancers graduate just three players from this year's squad.
Hahn finishes her four year career with 1,430 points, 10th on the Lancers' all-time list. Olsen finishes her collegiate career after posting one of the finest single seasons in CBU history, leading the Lancers with 18.5 points per game and being named to the All-GSAC team. Chynna Burwell rounds out the trio of seniors for the Lancers and was one of the few bright spots for CBU Friday morning, hitting 2-of-3 shots and grabbing three boards.
Shawnee State had four players in double figures, with Ballman and Alex Pohl leading the way with 12.
2011 marks the final season of NAIA competition for the Lancers, as CBU transitions to NCAA Division II. The Lancers join the Pacific West Conference next season.
