RIVERSIDE, Calif. - In a battle for Inland Empire supremacy, California Baptist University fell flat against its rivals to the north of the county line, losing 3-0 to No. 3 Cal State San Bernardino Wednesday night.
The Lancers dropped the match by scores of 25-21, 25-18 and 25-22, hitting their second worst percentage of the year at .098. The only team to hold CBU to a lower percentage this season was four-time defending National Champions and top-ranked Concordia-St. Paul.
"We see where we need to be, but offensively we just aren't there yet," said Head Coach Ryan McGuyre. "They have a good team and have had one for a while. I'm confident in the near future we can get this rivalry back to where it needs to be, but tonight wasn't our night."
The Lancers made each set competitive with eight total lead changes and 20 ties in the match, but the firepower and defense of the Coyotes won out in each game.
CSUSB totaled 10 blocks in the match, getting four solos and five assists from Samantha Middleborn. The Lancers finished with nine total blocks, five of which came in the third game.
CBU took a 15-13 lead mid-way through the third set, but a 9-2 run by the Coyotes ended the threat.
Two days after earning her second PacWest Player of the Week award, Ingrid Carmona once again led the team with 15 kills on the night, albeit on her second worst hitting percentage of the season at .152. Andrea Csaszi led CBU with 13 digs in the match and Jordyn Siko posted 23 assists.
The Coyotes were led by a balanced offensive attack from their two outside hitters, getting 13 kills from Priscilla Collings and 10 from Danielle Newcombe. Kelcie Tolan led all players with 14 digs in the match and Camille Smith had a match-high 35 assists.
"I think we have some great pieces in place, but our offense takes time to learn," said McGuyre. "This season is a work in progress still."
The Lancers move to 7-4 on the year, while CSUSB improves to 9-0. CBU will be back in action Saturday, traveling to Grand Canyon for its second PacWest match.
