CARSON, Calif. --- Jordan Rover scored twice, and his second one was golden as it lifted Cal State Dominguez Hills, an NCAA Division II power, to a 2-1 overtime win over California Baptist University in a non-conference game Saturday evening in Carson.
The loss is the Lancers' second straight 2-1 setback to open the season as they fall to 0-2. The Toros improve to 2-0.
Rover, who equalized in the 65th minute, put away the game winner 5:33 into overtime on the only shot of the extra time for either team.
The Lancers were outshot 23-8, including a 15-1 margin from
halftime on. However, the Lancers played the final 43 minutes a man down,
taking a red card in the 53rd minute.
"I'm proud of the way the guys played, especially after we went a man down,"
said CBU Head Coach Ryan Jorden. "It was an even first half, and even after we
went down a man the guys' work rate was tremendous to try and win it. Just like
the other day, though, it comes down to being able to finish your chances. We
had a few in the first half that had we converted, it could have been a
completely different game."
For the first 45, while the numbers were even, the play was just as even. CBU struck right away with a goal from Osvaldo Bastida in the seventh minute to go up 1-0. Alex Anderson got the assist.
The Lancers carried that lead into the locker room.
Joey Pacheco made a career-high 11 saves, including seven in the first half when seven of the Toros' eight shots were on frame.
"I think we're going to be a really good team this year, but we have continue to work at getting better each day in training," said Jorden.
