CLAREMONT, Calif. --- California Baptist University overcame a slow start and scored twice in the final 15 minutes to knick a 2-1 road win at Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Wednesday night in Claremont.
The win is the Lancers' first of the season after two tough one-goal setbacks to UC San Diego and Cal State Dominguez Hills. They improve to 1-2 on the season.
The Stags fall to 1-1.
After falling behind early, the Lancers responded with a late flurry, getting goals from Willie Rupert in the 75th minute, and the winner from Jonathan Fausto in the 83rd.
"We played a very well coached and organized team, and our work rate was not good enough to put them under pressure in the first half," said CBU Head Coach Ryan Jorden. "We didn't play fast enough and the tempo wasn't high enough to get into position to score goals in the first half."
Instead, it was the Stags who scored first when Harrison Doyle scored just nine minutes in to put the Lancers in an early hole. The Lancers finished the first half with a 9-6 advantage in shots but couldn't find the back of the net.
That all changed after halftime.
"We had a good talk at halftime and had a greater sense of purpose and energy in the second half, and played at a better tempo," said Jorden. "As a result, we got around the goal and had better chances."
The first goal came in the 75th minute when Marc Hope's shot rattled off a Stag defender's hand, awarding a penalty kick to the Lancers. Senior Willie Rupert stepped up and converted his second PK of the season to equalize with 15 minutes left.
Then, just eight minutes later, Hope played a perfect cross
to the far post. Fausto was waiting there, and he promptly tucked in his first
goal of the season, which proved to be the game-winner.
The Lancers finished the game outshooting the Stags, 18-13. Joey Pacheco made
four saves, three of them in the first half.
