The loss snaps the Lancers' three-game winning streak and drops them to 7-3-1 overall, 5-2-0 PacWest (15 points).
The Seasiders improve to 3-4-1, 2-4-1 (7 points).
In a game largely dominated by the Lancers, they indeed dominated everything except what matters most-the scoreboard. CBU out-shot the Seasiders 19-6, including a 10-2 margin in the second half, but could never find the back of the net.
The Lancers had their best chance in the 60th minute when Michael Salazar actually found the net, but was whistled for offside just prior to his strike.
In overtime, the Seasiders' Bent Johnson ran past three Lancers down the right side, received a ball and then slid it across the goal mouth to a wide-open Puertas, who easily tapped home the winner.
BYU-Hawaii keeper Trevor Lesueur collected nine saves for the Seasiders' second shutout of the season and first since a scoreless draw with Chaminade Sept. 15.
