RIVERSIDE, Calif. — Twenty-fourth-ranked California Baptist University had to face some adversity Wednesday evening but was up for the challenge as it grabbed an 83-70 win.
The Lancers remain undefeated in Van Dyne Gym under head coach Rick Croy, moving to 3-0 on the 2014-15 season. CBU is 17-0 now at home with Croy at the helm. CSULA opens the season 0-1.
Ryan Berg and Gelaun Wheelwright were neck-and-neck as CBU's top scoring duo. Berg scored 18 points, ending the night with a 6-for-10 performance from the field and 3-for-4 from beyond the arc. Wheelwright finished with one less at 17 points off 6-for-11 shooting. Michael Smith (3-for-6) and Trevone Williams (3-for-8) also scored in double-figures, grabbing 11 and 10 points, respectively.
CBU opened with a 4-0 run off jumpers from Chris Brown and Taj Spencer, but the Golden Eagles stayed right with the Lancers. The visitors wouldn't let the home squad jump out in front like its used to doing.
The Lancers built up a seven-point cushion with 12:44 remaining in the half, but CSULA battled back into the game and even took a brief lead at 26-25. CBU took back its upper hand, walking into the break with a 35-31 advantage.
After CSULA evened the game at 35-35, CBU responded with an 11-0 run, capped by a difficult three-point shot from Williams, to go up by double-digits and force a Golden Eagle timeout.
Taking advantage of free points at the line, the Golden Eagles cut the Lancers' lead back into single-digits with 10 minutes to go. Unfazed, Eric Nelson stole the ball and slammed it home to put his team up 65-54.
Despite CSULA cutting back into single-digit territory heading down the stretch, the Lancers grabbed offensive rebounds to stay on offense and finished free throws to build up their cushion once more.
CBU closed out the last two minutes of action to force the Golden Eagles to take tough shots and kept them off the boards. Smith put an exclamation point on the victory with a dunk just seconds before the final buzzer went off, sealing CBU's 83-70 win.
The Lancers continue their home stand with a game Saturday against San Francisco State at 7:00 p.m.
