BILLINGS, Mont. — On a cold day in Montana, California Baptist University set out on its goal of a top-six finish at the NCAA Division II West Region meet. For the second year, the Lancers finished in fifth place to secure a trip to the championship meet held Dec. 6 in Louisville, Ky.
The PacWest champions had all five scoring runners placing in the top-66 out of 155 competitors, despite facing challenges like freezing weather and their longest race of the year.
"Before the race started, the clouds rolled in and it got windy," said head coach Ben Gall. "That was kind of a shock since it was nice five minutes before the race, but we pushed through. We're excited to qualify."
PacWest Runner of the Year Taylor Guske paved the way for not only CBU, but the conference as well. The senior grabbed ninth overall with a time of 31 minutes 10.36 seconds, shaving off a full three minutes from last year's West Region race. The feat adds All-West Region to Guske's still growing list of accolades from this season.
"We're really happy for him and the guys to move on," said Gall. "The goal was to be in the top six and we did that as a group, so we get to run again."
Abdel El-Hajjami followed not too far behind in 31:57.75 for 32nd, while Bryton Reim was close behind in 37th place (32:11.06).,Valentin Robert and Hector Hernandez rounded out the scoring runners, taking 64th and 66th place, respectively. Robert clocked in at 32:48.35 and Hernandez ended the 10K race in 32:54.83.
While they didn't score for CBU, Jeremiah Gotts and Lucas Graham also ran in the meet, crossing the finish line in 33:44.48 and 33:58.94, respectively.
CBU returns home for some final tuneups before heading out for the championship meet, which will be another 10K race, most likely in similar weather conditions. After experiencing it once, CBU hopes to be able to plow through once more, this time improving on last year's 22nd-place team finish.
