RIVERSIDE, Calif. – When the USTFCCCA Division I Women's National Poll was released on Tuesday morning, California Baptist University found itself listed among the top-30 teams in the country for the first time in the Division I era. CBU was led at the Roy Griak Invitational by Anett Somogyi, who was named the WAC Women's Cross Country Athlete of the Week.
CBU ranks No. 30 in the national poll. The Lancers knocked off No. 22 Minnesota and No. 24 Columbia—the first ranked opponents CBU has defeated in the D-I era—en route to winning the Roy Griak Invitational on Saturday. The Lancers are the lone representative for the WAC in either the men's or women's national poll.
Somogyi has now claimed WAC Cross Country Athlete of the Week honors twice in her career and is the second CBU runner to earn that distinction this season.
The strong team performance at the Roy Griak Invitational also paid dividends for CBU with the release of the USTFCCCA Regional Rankings on Monday, which saw the Lancers move up one spot to a program-high No. 6 in the West Region, surpassing UCLA and becoming the highest ranked women's cross country team in Southern California.
CBU also stayed put at No. 10 in the USTFCCCA Men's Regional Rankings.
The Lancers will be split between the Arturo Barrios Invitational, hosted by Texas A&M, and the UCR Highlander Invite on their next race day—October 19th.
