New Conference, Same Goal in Mind

RIVERSIDE, Calif. – After establishing its dominance at conference championships the last few years, California Baptist University has a new challenge in front of it on Saturday. The Lancers are looking for their first Western Athletic Conference title in their inaugural NCAA Division I season, heading to Jefferson Park Golf Course on October 27 for the WAC Championship Meet.
While it may be a new conference, the expectations are still there. CBU's men have won seven-straight championships, while the women have won five, including the last four, and have never finished outside the top-three.
"We need to take care of variables we can control," said Coach Adam Tribble. "I hope each of our individuals competing, go into the race with individual purpose and focus to execute their individual race plans. If they do that, it will just help us find team success."
In addition to pursuing team titles, the Lancers will compete for All-WAC honors as individuals. In order to be named All-WAC, a runner must finish in the top-14. Spots one through seven earn first-team recognition, followed by eight through 14 for second-team recognition.

Going into this weekend, the Lancers were picked to be the top finisher in the WAC Pre-Championship Coaches Poll, receiving seven out of nine first-place votes. The coaches poll is voted on by the coaches of all WAC teams, who are not allowed to vote for their own team.
As a team, the Lancers finished second in three of their four races this season. Individually, Somogyi claimed the highest finish of the year for CBU with a second-place finish at the UC Riverside Invitational. She also finished in the top-five individually at the Mark Covert Classic and the Roy Griak Invitational. Mate has also been a strong contributor to CBU's success this season, with top-20 finishes in all four races.
"I'm hoping the women continue to do what they've done all year," said Tribble. "We didn't have the best race at Texas A&M, but if we can compete and take care of our business individually, I think we can walk away pleased with the result."
