BILLINGS, Mont. — California Baptist University has had to battle obstacles all year—including disappointing injuries—and the NCAA Division II West Region meet was no different. Despite the cold weather Saturday morning, the Lancers improved on last year's finish to take eighth overall and qualified an individual for the championship meet for the first time.
After taking ninth last year, CBU scored 70 less points to move up a spot as a team. While this year's score of 196 would have qualified the Lancers last year, it wasn't enough this year, despite being just 11 points behind the sixth-place team.
"We're definitely getting more competitive even though we've had to overcome obstacles," said head coach Ben Gall. "It's frustrating to be so close and not qualify as a team, but we're proud of the girls."
Two Lancers finished in the top 10, with Caroline Barkechir taking second place overall out of 167 runners. The sophomore logged a time of 21 minutes 12.11 seconds, giving her a 5:40 mile pace and All-West Region status. She was just six seconds behind the West Region Champion, Katelyn Steen from Western Washington.
Veronica Hall also finished in the top 10, taking ninth overall in 21:37.99 to also earn herself All-West Region honors.
"Having two girls finish in the top 10 is pretty impressive," said Gall. "It was a big jump for us. It's really cool for Caroline to be able to move on individually."
Millie Leitich was the third Lancer to cross the finish line, taking 54th with a time of 22:58.69. Alicia Williams and Katie Deimling followed neck-and-neck with Williams edging out Deimling by less than a second. Williams logged a time of 23:15.89 and Deimling finished in 23:16.24.
Natalie Ball (23:42.84) and Ester Mueller (25:08.87) rounded out the Lancers competing in the West Region meet.
Barkechir will be the first female runner to represent CBU at the NCAA Division II Championship Meet on Dec. 6 in Louisville, Ky.
