LOUISVILLE, Ky. — For the second year in a row, California Baptist University qualified for the NCAA Division II Championships. After a cold, windy challenge in the West Regional, the Lancers were hit with even worse conditions at Tom Sawyer State Park for the final meet.
CBU pushed through a sloppy, muddy course to finish in the top-25 in NCAA Division II for the second year in a row, taking 24th with 655 team points Saturday morning. It was another step in the right direction for the Lancers.
"It's progress for our team in the sense that we want to build a team that's consistently here and consistently getting better," CBU Coach Ben Gall said. "We may not have had the result we wanted, but we have the expectation that we are always going to be here. We are building that culture."
Leading CBU was its two French transfers. Abdel El-Hajjami was their top finisher at 76th in 32 minutes, 19 seconds flat, while Valentin Robert clocked in 39 seconds later (32:58.00) at 129th overall in the 9.65K race.
Seniors Bryton Reim and Taylor Guske placed right near each other at 141 and 144, respectively. Reim finished in 33:10.50 and Guske was less than three seconds off him (33:13.20).
Rounding out the Lancers' scoring five was freshman Hector Hernandez, who took 165th in 33:44.00. Jeremiah Gotts and Lucas Graham were also in the field for CBU. Gotts finished 185th in 34:14.70, and Graham took 212 in 35:44.70.
With five runners with NCAA Championship experience returning in 2015, the Lancers will look to qualify for the national meet for the third year in a row and build on the standard they have set for themselves.
"It's easier when you've done it before so this is good for our future, and we have five guys coming back who will have done this before," said Gall, who only had two runners with experience at the NCAAs Saturday -- Reim and Guske. "That's big."
