SAN DIEGO, Calif. — With just two games left before the PacWest Conference Championship Tournament, California Baptist University came out strong looking to sweep Point Loma, but surrendered a 91-83 loss to the Sea Lions.
The defeat drops the Lancers to 14-11, 12-7 in conference. PLNU improves to 17-9 and 13-7 in the PacWest with the win.
Erin Asher led CBU with 20 points on the night, shooting 6-of-13 from the field. Ashley Jones followed with 17 points (6-for-10), with Cassidy Mihalko and Olivia Weber rounding out the scorers in double figures with 15 and 11 points, respectively.
The Lancers opened the contest with 52 points in the first half alone, ending the period with a 57.1 shooting clip from the field and 46.2 from three-point range.
While Point Loma scored the first points of the night, things turned for the Sea Lions with 13 minutes before halftime as Jones evened the score at 12-12.
The Sea Lions tried to stay in front, but Mihalko sparked a 7-0 run that gave the Lancers their first lead of the game at 19-17. PLNU cut it within one at 21-20, but CBU exploded on a 25-7 run to hold an 18-point margin with three-and-a-half minutes remaining in the half.
Holding a 52-37 upper hand at halftime, momentum was hugely on the side of the Lancers, but there was still 20 minutes left to play.
PLNU came out determined to take control of the contest and opened the half with a 13-2 run to put the game very much within reach at 54-50 and forcing CBU to call a timeout.
CBU desperately fought to hold onto its lead, but shots weren't falling for the Lancers, while the Sea Lions caught fire on their end of the court. PLNU shot 60-percent from the field in the second half and hit all but one three-pointer (5-for-6).
The home squad took over the lead just under the eight-minute mark, and held on for the remainder of the contest to secure the 91-83 victory.
CBU has one more road trip left in the regular season, making the trek to Dixie State for an early tipoff Saturday morning. The Lancers and Red Storm face off at 9 a.m. PST, with the game being broadcasted live on CBS Sports Network.
