ARLINGTON, TX--- The California Baptist University women's basketball team survived a late-game scare in Arlington to maintain its lead atop the Western Athletic Conference standings in a critical road win over the UTA Mavericks 77-70.
The win moves the Lancers to 12-3, which keeps them one game ahead of ACU and SUU in the standings with three games remaining on the schedule. The victory also keeps CBU undefeated in WAC road games this season as they now boast a perfect 7-0 record in such contests.
The Mavericks were the early aggressors, jumping out to a lead they would hold for most of the first quarter. The Lancers would regain the advantage late in the first quarter and would take a 19-18 lead into the second period. CBU used that late-quarter momentum to spur a huge run to begin the second quarter as they would open the frame on a 16-2 run that would give the Lancers a 15-point lead, which would be its largest of the first half. The play of Grace Schmidt and Filipa Barros spurred the run, as they combined for 14 of those points. The Mavericks would gain a little ground on the deficit to end the half, finishing the period on an 11-5 run to trail only 40-31 at the break.
Schmidt ended the half with 14 points on 6-6 shooting to lead the way, while Barros nearly had a first-half double-double with 12 points and nine rebounds. As a team, the Lancers would shoot 50% from the field and would outscore UTA 21-0 in fastbreak opportunities.
UT Arlington continued to hang around in the third period and would slash the lead down to as few as five points in the frame. The Lancers would not allow the Mavericks to get any closer, holding a 9-point lead, 63-54, heading into the fourth quarter.
The fourth quarter was a battle, and it started early as the Mavericks closed in on the lead with an early 8-2 run in the first five minutes to cut the lead to five. Offense was tough to come by for the Lancers, as they scored only four field goals in the entire quarter, but two came in the final minute. The Mavericks would cut the lead to three, which was the closest they came in the second half, with one minute remaining off a Lancer turnover to make it 73-70. Shawnee Nordstrom would come up clutch on CBU's next possession as she would swoop to the basket for a layup to extend the Lancer lead back to two possessions and force UTA into desperation mode with 37 seconds left.
The Lancer defense would ultimately seal the deal as Emma Johansson and Lauren Olsen would reject UTA's next two shot attempts to seal the 77-70 victory for CBU in Arlington. The combination of Barros and Schmit led the way for the Lancers in the victory, scoring a total of 43 points in the game. Barros had another all-around game with 23 points, 14 rebounds, seven assists, and three steals while converting a career-best 13 free throws on 14 attempts. Schmidt was equally as impressive with 20 points on 9-10 shooting to pair with four rebounds. Olsen was her usual consistent self with 17 points on seven made field goals.
CBU had an uncharacteristically poor shooting night from the perimeter, but would more than make up for it in the paint and in the fastbreak department. The Lancers would hammer the Mavericks in the paint to the tune of a 46-18 advantage and would score 30 fastbreak points compared to just 12 for the home squad.
NEXT: The Lances will continue their Texas road trip on Saturday afternoon as they take on the Tarleton State Texans at noon PT.
