RIVERSIDE, Calif. — Heading into Saturday's matchup, No. 11-ranked California Baptist University knew it needed to be focused and united to take down a tough Point Loma team. The Lancers shook off a rough first half and came out strong in the second to grab a close 57-55 win over the Sea Lions.
CBU improves to 14-1 overall and remains undefeated in the PacWest at 8-0. After Dixie State upset No. 13 Azusa Pacific tonight, the Lancers are the only team to have not conceded a conference loss, putting them at the top of the standings. PLNU drops to 13-3, 6-3 in the PacWest with the result.
Gelaun Wheelwright led three Lancers scoring in double-digits, finishing with 15 points (4-for-12). Michael Smith followed with 11 points, shooting .500 from both inside and outside the arc. Smith went 5-for-10 from the field and hit an important three in the second half.
After missing a few games due to injury, Ryan Berg was back in the lineup and continued his double-digit scoring ways. The sophomore added 10 points (4-for-7) for the Lancers, extending his streak to 20-straight games.
The Sea Lions scored the first points of the game, opening with a 6-0 run to jump out in front early. The Lancers responded and evened the game at 8-8, but it was the closest they would get to taking control of the score in the first half.
Heading into halftime, PLNU held a 31-25 cushion, but CBU came out of the break firing on all cylinders. The Lancers improved their shooting from 37-percent in the first half to an impressive 52.2-percent in the second.
Down by five early in the second half, the Lancers went on a 6-0 run to even the game for just the second time. Chris Brown initiated the run with a layup, drawing a foul in the process for an and-one play. Smith tied the game at 34-34 off a shot from distance after Eric Nelson forced a turnover to put Smith on the attack.
The Lancers kept pushing and tried to keep the Sea Lions at bay, but Point Loma wasn't going to let up. The visitors battled back from behind 55-47 to just two points at 57-55.
With just seconds on the clock, PLNU attempted a Hail Mary buzzer-beater shot, but rattled it off the rim to give CBU the 57-55 victory.
CBU heads out on the road, taking on Dixie State on Monday before another battle with the Sea Lions next Saturday. The Lancers return home on Feb. 7 to host rival Azusa Pacific.
