GOLDEN, Colo. – Things were still close about halfway through California Baptist University's Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference dual at Colorado School of Mines Friday, but the Lancers wound up with a convincing 34-7 win after closing the dual with five-straight wins.
CBU improved to 11-4, 5-2 in conference with the victory, while Colorado School of Mines fell to 4-3, 0-2. The Lancers won eight of the 10 matches and got more than three points in five of them.
Four matches into the contest, CBU held a 9-4 lead but saw Colorado School of Mines pull within two with a decision at 157 pounds.
Alec Smith helped turn the tide quickly for the Lancers when he defeated Ethan Ruby with a 15-0 technical fall in the second period of the 165 bout. Christian Smith helped put CBU up 18-7 with a 12-1 major decision victory over Karl Breidenbach at 174.
The Orediggers still had a chance with 18 points still up for grabs, but Jacob Waste (184) squashed all hope of a comeback when he pinned Benjamin Krantz just two minutes into the match. Paul Head (197) kept things going strong for CBU when he pinned Paul Wilson at the 5:30 mark. David Dill capped the dual on a 5-0 run for the Lancers when he majored Nick DeBruyn, 14-4, in the heavyweight match.
CBU will now look and see what individual glory it can capture in the Rocky Mountain Collegiate Open, which is also hosted by Colorado School of Mines, Saturday.
