MALIBU, Calif. – At this point, there is little Josh Hanson can do to surprise anyone who follows California Baptist University to any extent. Even so, his accomplishments at the Malibu Invite on Saturday were astounding.
In a day where no team scores were kept, Hanson jumped out from among a sea of individuals at Pepperdine. The senior posted five victories on the day and grabbed an NCAA Division II B-cut time in the 200-yard butterfly.
"No, he can't surprise me anymore," Coach Rick Rowland said. "He's trained extremely hard in the offseason and into the fall. He trained with [Olympian] Ryan Lochtes' club and it's really showing. He was showing off a lot of the new technique he picked up there today."
Hanson had two victories in the first two hours of the event, which included Division I schools Pepperdine and Bakersfield, as well as Concordia and Cal Lutheran. He started with a win and consideration time of one minute, 50.71 seconds in the 200 fly and followed that with a 200-free victory in 1:41.51.
"He's recovering well, he swam the 200 fly and free in an hour of each other," Rowland said. "It was on [Michael] Phelps mode swimming all those events so close together."
Still, his day was far from done, as he rattled off victories in the 50 and 100 breast, with respective times of 57.39 and 26.99, and 100 individual medley (51:46) before adding a third-place finish in the 50 fly (22.85).
"It's fun to watch him try new events, too, like he did today," Rowland said. "He had never really done the 50 breast and he almost won it.
"He has some big goals for himself, he is trying to hit some Olympic trial cuts and obviously get some wins at the NCAA Championships," Rowland said. "He has some lofty goals but he's working hard and trying to do things on another level this year."
Of course, Hanson wasn't the only one having fun for CBU Saturday. Alexis Ohmar turned in several quality swims with a pair of second-place finishes in the 100 fly (52.32) and 200 free (1:41.83). Ohmar may have been most proud of his fourth-place performance in the 100 free, as he clocked in at 46.69, which was just .65 of a second off the D-II B cut. Ohmar would also touch fourth in the 50 fly (23.49).
It was a sign the Indonesia native's transition to collegiate swimming in the United States is going well after he transferred in near the halfway mark in 2014-15, Rowland said.
"Alexis has been really consistent to start this season," Rowland said. "He seems to have a good handle on swimming yards now after he had always swam meters. He's a very versatile freestyler for us, from sprints to 500 he is really solid. He has good underwaters and can attack a lot of different events."
Justin Quiroga also grabbed runner-up finish with a time of 2:15.03 in the 200 breast for the Lancers, who received two bronze-medal swims from James Wilson in the 50 (24.94) and 200 back (1:59.28).
Next up for CBU is its alumni meet Saturday at 11 a.m. at the Lancer Aquatics Center.
