SANTA CLARA, Calif. – Entering into its fourth Western Water Polo Association game a big underdog, California Baptist University came out looking to shock 16th-ranked Santa Clara on the road Thursday night.
While the Lancers certainly did that by taking a two-goal lead in the first quarter and into halftime, they were just a shot off of pulling the upset over the Broncos in a 9-8 loss. CBU falls to 12-9, 1-3 in conference, while Santa Clara improves to 6-14, 1-1.
Joseph Moorman had a combined 15 saves and steals in the cage for the Lancers, while Teddy Forte notched a hat trick and three steals in the field.
CBU came out strong and grabbed a two-goal lead by the end of the first quarter, 3-1, and kept its cushion going into halftime, 6-4. The Lancers built up the lead by playing strong in six-on-five advantages, scoring on five of the eight they earned on the night.
Unfortunately, the Broncos showed why they're ranked so highly by winning the third quarter, 3-1, to tie the game. Santa Clara continued its strong play in the fourth to pull out the narrow victory.
Tucker Angelo score two goals, assisted on two others and drew an exclusion. Clint Walling had three steals, a goal, drawn ejection and two assists. Nick Candau scored, drew two ejections and forced a turnover. Brent Teraoka had a goal, assist and two drawn ejections.
A busy weekend in Santa Clara continues for the Lancers, as they open the Santa Clara Rodeo against 18th-ranked St. Francis Friday at 4:30 p.m. They resume the Rodeo with an 8 a.m. clash with No. 14 Bucknell and Brown, the 11th-ranked team in the NCAA, on Saturday.
