POMONA, Calif. – Despite playing its third and fourth-straight teams ranked in the NCAA Division III top 10, California Baptist University completed a sweep through its four games in the Gary Troyer Tournament with victories over Chapman and Redlands on Saturday at Pomona-Pitzer.
Clint Walling and Tucker Angelo played huge roles in an 11-10 win over Chapman and 13-10 victory against Redlands, with those teams entering as the sixth and fourth-ranked teams in Division III, respectively. The duo each scored seven goals on the day, each netting three goals against the Panthers and then four more versus the Bulldogs. Joseph Moorman had 28 saves Saturday, with 16 against Redlands. Brent Teraoka had five goals Saturday, with a hat trick against Chapman, for the Lancers.
"Chapman maybe wasn't our best game, but it was nice being in a close game in the fourth quarter and winning by one goal," Coach Kevin Rosa said. "That means you're executing and doing what you need to do."
Those victories extended CBU's winning streak to seven games, which is the longest it has enjoyed since becoming a member of the NCAA back in 2013, and improved its record to 9-6. The Lancers won eight straight in 2012.
CBU has a chance to rest up before playing five games in three days, as it hosts UC San Diego for Western Water Polo Association action on Thursday and then hosts the Lancer Invite Friday and Saturday.
"We're on a little bit of a roll, so hopefully we take some of that momentum into a week of practice and into our game with UC San Diego on Thursday," Rosa said, "that's a big WWPA game."
Chapman went back and forth with the Lancers to start the day, as no team led by more than two goals in a game that saw six ties.
Tied at 4-4, Royce Daniel Laverne scored 21 seconds before halftime to put the Lancers ahead going into the break. Teraoka gave CBU a two-goal lead, 6-4, less than a minute into the third, but the Panthers pulled even with 5:20 to go in the quarter.
Angelo scored back-to-back goals for the Lancers to keep them ahead, 7-6 and 8-7, but Chapman matched both scores to force another tie, 8-8, with 4:12 to play. Teraoka and Tanner Shore provided the two biggest goals of the game within 36 seconds of each other to put CBU up 10-8 with 2:48 to go.
Chapman scored with 1:14 remaining to keep it close, but Angelo provided another insurance goal with 53 seconds to play to help ice the game, despite another Panther goal with 36 ticks on the clock.
"We were able to take a two-goal cushion, put ourselves in position to hold onto a lead and make some plays," Rosa said. "It was nice to have that experience, it will be useful for us later in the season."
Both teams came out firing in the first quarter of the Redlands game, but CBU took a 6-2 lead after the first eight minutes, thanks in large part to five saves from Moorman and two goals from Walling. Moorman would make seven saves in the second quarter to keep his team ahead 8-5 going into halftime.
The Lancers opened the game on a 7-2 run, with Walling scoring three of those goals and Angelo, Ryan Penney, Teraoka and Spencer Shore getting in on the action, as well.
Redlands climbed within three goals, 9-6, with 4:43 to go in the third, but the Lancers notched four of the next five goals to put the game away, with a 13-7 advantage with 3:13 remaining. Angelo scored three times in that run, while Nick Candau produced the other.
"We came out on a roll against Redlands, with our offense and solid defense," Rosa said. "We played well and got the experience we needed this weekend."
