Second-Half Fight
10/31/2015 5:28:00 PM | Men's Soccer
RIVERSIDE, Calif. — Despite going down a man in the last 10 minutes of action, California Baptist University never stopped fighting, but couldn't hold off a fast Hawaii Pacific squad.
The Lancers lost 3-1 Saturday afternoon, dropping them to 6-8-2 on the year, 5-5-1 in the PacWest. HPU improves to 9-5-1 overall, 7-3-1 in conference to stay in contention for the PacWest title.
Neither team could get much going in the first half, going into the break even at 0-0.
HPU broke through first and made it 2-0 not long after. With 20 minutes still left to play, the Lancers kept pushing, knowing it would come.
It did. Julian Ekeze scored what could be the prettiest goal the Lancers have scored all year in the 82nd minute, cutting the margin in half, 2-1. Daniel Moss and Dominic Escalera teamed up on the assist, finding Ekeze wide open at the far post. He looked up, saw his spot and curled his shot straight into the far post upper corner, giving HPU's goalkeeper no shot at making a save.
The goal seemed to shift momentum in favor of the Lancers, but the home team soon got a plot twist as a Lancer was shown the dreaded red card to leave his team playing a man down.
Even still, CBU kept fighting and looked like it'd get an equalizer on multiple occasions. Aidan Apodaca was responsible for most of those chances as the sophomore gave the Shark back line a handful.
Noah Oyler made a big time save, tipping a long-range shot over the goal in the 87th minute to keep hope alive in the Lancers.
With a minute to go, the Sharks burst that bubble, however, as they scored their third of the game to secure the 3-1 win.
CBU concludes the season on the road the same way it started conference, in the Bay Area. The Lancers first take on Notre Dame de Namur on Nov. 5 and then Academy of Art on Nov. 7.
