RIVERSIDE, Calif. - In the final home game of the season, California Baptist University wanted to end on a high note as it honored two seniors before kickoff. Courtney Shutts and Lauren Wallberg were sent off the Lancer Soccer Field in style as CBU coasted to a 4-0 victory over Hawaii Pacific.
The Halloween win puts the Lancers 7-7-2 overall, 7-3-1 in the PacWest. The Sharks fall to 7-9-0 on the year, 4-7-0 in conference.
"Our defense was stellar as usual," said Coach Kristen St. Clair. "The team has been working very hard to get sharper and I think the players were rewarded for their hard work today. HPU is a good team."
Neither team really challenged the keepers until the 23rd minute when Sara Escobedo had to tip a shot off the post and out of danger.
Wallberg gave her team its first dangerous opportunity just minutes later as she fired off a low shot to the corner. It was just inches too wide, however, as it pinged off the post and out to keep it 0-0.
While the Sharks may have had gone into halftime with more shots on goal, the Lancers came out fired up to start the second and scored two goals in a span of two minutes.
Angelique Carrillo showed a never-give-up attitude, sprinting onto a long ball from Desarae Felix that looked like the Shark goalkeeper might get to first. The HPU keeper tried to kick it out of danger as she was out of her box and couldn't pick it up, but Carrillo blocked the defensive effort and easily slotted the ball home.
Just two minutes later, the Lancers struck again. Off a long throw in from Sydney Rockett, Wallberg turned and fired off a shot through traffic. Once again the HPU goalkeeper got a piece on it, but it wasn't enough to keep the ball out of the back of the net as CBU took a 2-0 advantage in the 58th minute.
The Lancers kept pushing, looking to add some more insurance and keep the Sharks out of the net.
Justene Kesterson, who's been trying all season to score, finally broke through her scoreless drought and found the back of the net in the 82nd minute off an assist from Jordanne Laky, putting her team in front 3-0.
As often in soccer, once one comes, more are on the way. Kesterson found the back of the net once again minutes later, capping the game at 4-0.
"Our seniors did a tremendous job leading us on the field," said St. Clair. "Both of them have had tremendous careers here at CBU. It was a great opportunity for our players to honor them on Senior Day with such a great performance."
CBU concludes the season on the road the same way it started conference, in the Bay Area. The Lancers first take on Notre Dame de Namur on Nov. 5 and then Academy of Art on Nov. 7.
