RIVERSIDE, Calif. — California Baptist University battled five-time reigning PacWest Champion BYU-Hawaii before falling in five sets Tuesday night in the Van Dyne Gym.
The Lancers won the first two sets before the Seasiders launched a furious comeback for a 22-25, 14-25, 25-23, 25-9, 15-13 victory. CBU falls to 11-3, 4-2 in the PacWest and BYUH improves to 7-7, 5-1 to move in a tie for first place in the conference with Hawaii Pacific. The Lancers slip to a third-place tie with Dixie State.
Jenna Perry led CBU's offense with 18 kills on a .333 percentage (18-5-39) and Jordyn Siko amassed 42 assists and eight digs. Tori Ortman played big on the back line, with 20 digs, while Kristin McCord followed with 12.
Kiera Brunson logged a team-high seven blocks for CBU, while notching four kills without an error. Abbie Gortsema also hit at a high percentage (.533), with eight kills and no miscues. Lauren Hackett produced nine kills and eight digs, while Lauren Marr also hit for eight kills.
CBU got the start it wanted, winning the first two sets to put the Seasiders on their heels. The Lancers came blazing and hit .370 in the first set (11-1-27). BYUH took an 11-6 lead, which led to CBU taking a timeout and then scored the next eight points, with Siko serving, for a 14-11 lead.
Things started seesawing from there. The Seasiders moved back in front, 16-15, and led 19-18 in the late stages. CBU began to rally and used a 5-1 charge fueled by kills from Brunson and Hackett to go up 23-20. BYUH scored the next two points before the Lancers won it with consecutive kills from Hackett and Marr.
Siko continued her tough serving in set two, leading CBU on an opening 12-0 run that led to mass substitutions on both sides. The Seasiders pulled within 16-7 before the Lancers rattled off six-straight points, on two kills from Gortsema and aces from McCord and Soleil Smith, to take a 22-7 cushion. A combo block from Jordan Carter and Brunson ended the set.
While CBU controlled things early, BYUH came alive in the end and never hit under .333 percentage in the final sets to complete a dramatic comeback. The Lancers look to shake off the loss with a home match against Hawaii-Hilo Thursday at 7 p.m. and then another match with Chaminade on Saturday at the same time, same place.
