OAKLAND, Calif. – A standout defensive performance led California Baptist University to a sweep over Holy Names, effectively spoiling the Hawks' Senior Day plans, 25-16, 25-9, 25-23.
CBU improved to 20-7, 13-6 in the PacWest and HNU slipped to 3-25, 1-18. The Lancers smothered the Hawks' offense, allowing just 19 kills and forcing Holy Names into 20 errors on 114 attempts for a -.009 percentage.
Tori Ortman led the way with 17 digs for CBU. Kristin McCord and Jordyn Siko each finished with 13 digs, with 29 assists completing another double-double for Siko. Jessica Harris and Jenna Perry produced six and four blocks, respectively, for the Lancers.
A 12-1 run gave CBU an 18-8 lead in set one. Three kills from Lauren Hackett, who tied with Perry for a match-high 13 on the night, led the Lancers on a 4-0 run and 10-7 lead. HNU forced sideout but then CBU began an 8-0 run on three blocks from Harris and a block and kill from Perry, who hit a .320 percentage (13-5-25) on the night.
Holy Names managed to stick close to CBU early in the second set, even forcing a tie at 8-8. It all went downhill from there for the home team, with the Lancers scoring eight-straight points – half of which came on Hackett spikes – to go up 16-8.
A kill gave the Hawks a chance to serve, but it went into the net for an error to spark a 9-0 CBU run that ended the set, 25-9. Two Hackett kills and a block and kill from Laura Price fueled the charge.
Holy Names came together in the third set. CBU used an early 7-0 run, coming on a block and kill from Abbie Gortsema and Perry each, to take an 8-3 lead in the frame. Holy Names began chipping away and eventually used a 5-1 run to take a 21-20 lead.
Perry rattled off three-straight points with two kills and a block to give the Lancers a 23-21 edge. She gave her team match point, 24-22, with another attack and a Holy Names error delivered the CBU victory.
The regular season ends for the Lancers next Saturday, as they host PacWest-rival Azusa Pacific in the Van Dyne Gym at 7 p.m.
