PRESCOTT, Ariz. — In the early stages of the season, California Baptist University competed in the Embry-Riddle Mile High Open for a chance to gain experience and build some rhythm.
CBU sent 10 wrestlers to the tournament with a mixture of reserves and starters representing the Lancers. Seven of the 10 earned top finishes, with all-around top performances from each athlete.
Paul Head, wrestling at the 197-pound weight class, and Christian Smith (174) took first place for CBU. Bradley Christensen placed second and Micah Lopez took fourth at 174 weight class, respectively, with Smith edging out Christensen in double overtime, 7-6.
Heavyweight Marty Vardanian took fourth by forcing a 19-second pin in his second match and then a 16-4 major decision in his third. Bryce Benlian sealed fourth place at 197 and won two of his matches with pins. Trent Smith (133) placed fifth in his bracket with two technical falls and a pin.
The highlight of the day however, comes from 197-pound champion Paul Head, who faced NCAA Division I wrestler Lance Benick of Arizona State -- the No. 3 recruit in the nation as a senior in high school. The match ended 4-3 in favor of Head, who appears to be hitting his stride early.
The 12th-ranked Lancers in Division II prepare to host fourth-ranked Mercyhurst Wednesday at 7 p.m.
