COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – California Baptist University matched its top finish in the Western Water Polo Association from last season when it took fourth in the WWPA Championships Sunday.
A 12-8 loss to host and fifth-seeded Air Force in the third-place game determined the final outcome, as the Lancers have taken fourth in the conference two years in a row now. Over the last two years, CBU reached the third-place game with upsets in the first round. Despite four goals from Brent Teraoka and 15 saves from Joseph Moorman, No. 19 CBU was unable to pull out one more upset against the 17th-ranked Falcons.
As the tournament's seventh seed, CBU knocked off second seed and 14th-ranked Loyola Marymount on Friday, 13-12, and nearly picked up a banner win in a 14-13 loss to ninth-ranked and top-seeded UC Davis Saturday.
After getting out to great starts in the first two rounds, the Lancers were unable to do so against Air Force. The Falcons scored the first two goals of the game, which were answered by tallies from Tanner Shore – on a Tucker Angelo assist – and Teraoka. The hosts were unfazed and scored eight of the next nine and led by as many as seven, 11-4, with 11 minutes left.
CBU dominated the rest of the game, going on a 4-1 run, but it was too late to get back into contention. Teddy Forte scored the final goal of the third quarter with 1:56 to go and Angelo struck first in the fourth near the four-minute mark. Teraoka scored twice over the final 1:45 to cap the scoring.
