BELLMONT, Calif. — On its final regular-season road trip of the season, California Baptist University looked to better its chances of extending the 2015 campaign into postseason. The Lancers defeated Notre Dame de Namur 2-0 Thursday, making it 357 minutes and 22 seconds since CBU has been scored on.
With the win, the Lancers improve to 8-7-2 on the year, 8-3-1 in the PacWest. The Argonauts on the other hand, fall to 3-14 overall and 3-9 in conference.
"We were solid on defense and dynamic on offense," said Coach Kristen St. Clair. "We created really good, dynamic chances when it's not easy to win on road. There aren't any easy games in our conference."
CBU wasted little time to get after it, firing off a shot in the first three minutes of action. Chaylin Couzens put the attempt on goal, forcing the Argonaut goalkeeper to make a save. Ten minutes later, the junior looked like she might break through but connected with the crossbar instead of finding the back of the net.
It was only a matter of time before the Lancers got through as Justene Kesterson scored her third goal of the year on an assist from Kayla Anderson in the 35th minute. Anderson crossed in a ball from the left side, finding Kesterson in the center of the box, took a touch and put it past the NDNU goalkeeper.
Jasmine Stokes looked to get in on the action as well, hoping to put the Lancers in front by two before halftime. She put a well-placed shot on goal in the 45th minute, but the Argonaut goalkeeper made the save to keep it 1-0 at the break.
NDNU tried to battle back into the game and took the first shot of the second half, but Sara Escobedo made the save to keep her net untouched.
Couzens broke through in the 72nd minute to extend her team's lead to two goals. After a ball was played in over the defense, Kesterson drew out the goalkeeper and passed the ball off to Couzens, who easily placed it into the empty net.
The Lancers kept control of the game and had another late chance for Stokes to score, but once again the NDNU goalkeeper came up with a save to end the game 2-0.
"The players been putting in a lot of hard work," said St. Clair. "We're getting results against good teams and finding our rhythm on both sides of the ball."
CBU finishes the regular season on Saturday, taking on Academy of Art at noon at the City College of San Francisco soccer field.
