SAN FRANCISCO — California Baptist University came out Saturday afternoon looking to close the 2015 season on a high note. The Lancers did just that, defeating Academy of Art 5-1.
"We did well," said senior Courtney Shutts. "Scoring five goals is a great way to end the season. Everyone played well and fought for each other. I'm really proud of everybody."
CBU finishes the season with a 9-7-2 overall record, 9-3-1 mark in the PacWest. The Urban Knights close their season with a 4-13-1, 3-9-1 in conference record.
"It was a great game," said head coach Kristen St. Clair. "Our defense was stellar and we were firing on all cylinders. We wanted to honor seniors with our performance and we did that."
ArtU got a few scares in the opening minutes, even hitting a shot off the post, but it wasn't long before the Lancers got on the board first. After Miranda Martinez hit the post on a shot, Angelique Carrillo crashed the net and tucked away the rebound to put CBU up 1-0 in the 21st minute.
Fifteen minutes later, Carrillo struck again. Isalei Tauese sent a cross deep into the box, finding Carrillo at the back post to head it home.
Coming out of halftime with the 2-0 lead, the Lancers kept pushing, hoping for more, and more they got.
Haley Wheelon assisted on CBU's third goal of the game, sending a cross over to Desarae Felix at the top of the box to make it 3-0 in favor of the visitors. It didn't stop from there, either. Six minutes later, Chaylin Couzens got into the action off another assist from Martinez, putting CBU up 4-0.
ArtU caught a break in the 78th minute as the Urban Knights were awarded a penalty kick. The home team converted to cut the deficit down to three goals, 4-1.
It was the first and only time ArtU would score, however, but it wasn't the final goal of the game. With just about 10 minutes remaining in the contest, Lanai Navarro dribbled down the field and fired off a shot on goal. The ArtU goalkeeper tried to make the save, but couldn't get enough of her hands on the ball as it rolled past her into the net to secure the 5-1 victory for the Lancers.
"It feels really surreal," said senior Lauren Wallberg, whose favorite CBU moment came her junior year when she scored against UC San Diego. "I can't believe it's really over, but I'm really thankful we went out with that win and did it as a team."
"Over my five years here, there have been some highs and lows, like with my injury, but it's been the best experience of my life," added Shutts. "I wouldn't trade anything for it."
