Lancers Come Back Strong

RIVERSIDE, Calif. – After failing to produce an individual winner on both boards a week earlier in a dual with Bakersfield, California Baptist University Diving Coach Jeff Couto predicted the tides would change Saturday at the Inland Empire Dive Invitational.
Despite a third team being in the mix in UC San Diego, Couto's comments proved prophetic. His trio of Zach Mullins, Zach Parry and Kendall Rummell started the day dominating the three-meter event and carried it through to the one-meter board, as well.
"For this year as an entire team, as a program, I felt like this was the best performance we have had," Couto said. "They rallied well together and really hit some big dives. We were going up against two top programs today."
CBU grabbed three of the top-four finishers on the three-meter in the eight-man event, including the victor. Mullins won it with a staggering 308.25 points and Rummell took third (281.15) to edge Parry (271.40).
Despite not getting the win on the one-meter springboard, Parry missed first place by just 1.15 of a point to take second with a 287.75 total.
"I did miss some dives on three-meter, but I just had to keep plugging along and keep diving," Parry said. "That's just part of diving."
Mullins was right on his tail with 284.65 points putting him in third. Rummell took fifth in the event, with 250.25 points.
Parry's 11-dive voluntary list yielded 497.5 points on the one-meter board, while Mullins and Rummell compiled 480.7 and 434.6, respectively.
"We saw in the voluntaries all of the athletes were pretty consistently in the sevens," Couto said.
Mullins' biggest dive on three-meter came halfway through when he posted 61.60 points, which tied for the highest total of the event, on his third dive. He closed it out with scores of 56 and 52.20 on his last two attempts.
"I didn't do too much, I just had fun and relied on what I've done in training," Mullins said. "I had consistent hurdles and demonstrated what I've done in practice."
On the three-meter board, Rummell went on a run in rounds two to five, with scores of 51.80, 50.40 and 55.35 over that span.
"I had a lot of family here and I hadn't dove in front of a lot of them," Rummell said. "I was super relaxed and wanted to show my family and myself what I can do. Some of the dives I did surprised myself."
Parry had the highest degree of difficulty list on the one-meter for the Lancers and had his biggest dive come in round two when he put up a 56.
In the three-meter voluntaries, Mullins shattered 500 points (508.85), while Parry put up 489.10 and Rummell added 468.25.
"We all flow off each other when we're doing well," Mullins said. "I hit an eight and the next guy wants to get a nine, it's just a lot of fun."
