Merciful Nightcap

RIVERSIDE, Calif. — After a long battle in the doubleheader opener where they couldn't seem to bring in runners, the California Baptist University Lancers came back to grab an 8-0 blasting over No. 19 Humboldt State in the nightcap.
The split puts the Lancers 5-2 on the season, while the Jacks open 1-1.
Ashley DeVaere continued to be a force at the plate, going 4-for-6 with a double, triple, an RBI and one run scored. Four Lancers finished the night with three hits, with Krista Mann knocking two doubles.
Despite putting runners on base, the Lancers couldn't quite cash them in for runs and found themselves trailing 4-0 after three innings. That changed in the bottom of the fifth, however, as DeVaere gave CBU a spark by tucking a shot down the right field line inside the first base and making her way to scoring position at third. Kailey Willingham then stepped up to the plate and sent a shot into left. The outfielder made the catch, but DeVaere tagged up to put the Lancers on the board, 4-1.
HSU tacked on two more runs in the seventh to put pressure on CBU to find five runs in the bottom half of the inning to keep the game alive. Krista Mann gave the Lancers hope as she doubled to left center, but she was left stranded as the Jacks took the first game 6-1.
Things were kept fairly quiet in the nightcap for the first two innings, but CBU exploded onto the scene in the third by plating three runs. Feeling energized from diverting a loaded-bases scenario, the Lancers put two runners on early as Sarah Murphy took a free walk down the line and Jordan Mowatt beat out the throw to first on a shallow bunt. Murphy advanced to third as the throw to first was off target and was sent home on the next play.
With one out, Mann at first and Mowatt at third, Mann acted like she was going to steal second to distract the Jacks from Mowatt at third. HSU threw the ball up the middle of the field, giving Mowatt the chance to make it home. She dodged the tag and slid safely home, while Mann advanced to second and made her way to third on an HSU throwing error. DeVaere once again made her way to the batter's box and rocked a double to right center, scoring Mann to give CBU a 3-0 lead.
Determined to keep the Jacks off the bags, the Lancers took down the visitors in order to get another chance on offense, looking to extend their lead. HSU managed to grab the first two outs, but Mowatt took a free pass to first and advanced to second as Savannah Miller singled up the middle. The pair added to the Lancers' tally as Mann doubled to right center, putting CBU well in control at 5-0. The two-out rally wasn't over just yet, however, as Willingham singled up the middle to score Mann before the Jacks could get out of the inning.
HSU tried to get a rally of its own going in the top of the fifth, putting two runners on base, but Kayla Hatch wanted to secure her victory and struck out the third out to give her team a chance at ending the game early.
Jacque Lopez led the bottom half of the inning off with a single up the middle, but a fielder's choice took her out on the next play. Still with Tayler Castro on base, Murphy walked to join her, and the pair moved up a base each after a ball got away from the Jacks catcher. HSU threatened the inning with its second putout, but Miller hit a hard-to-handle shot to shortstop, allowing Castro to score. The infielder turned to make the play at third, but realized she wasn't going to make it in time and switched her attention to first, but it was already too late. Miller was on first and Murphy was on third.
Like they had a few innings earlier, CBU made the same running play, sending Miller headed toward second to distract as Murphy stole home. As the catcher hurled the ball to try to catch Miller out at first, the first baseman was called for interference after Murphy safely slid home to end the game at 8-0 in favor of the Lancers.
CBU hits the road for the Dessert Stinger Tournament on Friday and Saturday, taking on five games in two days. The Lancers first face Western Washington at 11:30 a.m., then battle against Western Oregon at 2:00 p.m. and Sonoma State at 7:00 p.m.
