Taking The Sting Out

LAS VEGAS — Last year, California Baptist University was too hot to handle at the Desert Stinger Tournament and it seems the No. 23 Lancers caught the bug again this year, despite head coach Bill Baber's concerns of playing three games in one day.
The Lancers opened with a 7-4 victory over Western Washington and turned right around to defeat Western Oregon 5-3. CBU couldn't keep momentum going into the third game, however, dropping a 9-6 loss to Sonoma State to move to 7-3 on the season.
CBU 7, WWU 4
Trailing 1-0 after the first inning, CBU opened the second frame by putting two runners on base. Western Washington threatened to end the inning with the pair left on base as it grabbed two-straight outs, but Jenna Lieber and Jacque Lopez put themselves in scoring positions on a double steal. Mowatt then stepped up to bat and singled to right to score both, giving the Lancers a 2-1 lead.
Another two-out rally in the fourth extended CBU's cushion as Tayler Castro made her way around the bases on crucial Viking errors and put CBU in front 3-1.
Back at the plate in the fifth, CBU dug deep once again after WWU grabbed two outs. Krista Mann and Ashley DeVaere each walked and another Viking error allowed Mann to touch home before WWU could find the third out. The Vikings managed to score a run in the bottom half of the inning, but the Lancers responded right back in the sixth.
Lopez led off with a single to left and was sent home on a Sarah Murphy triple. Savannah Miller blasted a triple of her own, scoring Murphy easily, and plated a run herself after the Vikings' shortstop threw the ball away.
WWU tried to rally in the bottom of the seventh, scoring two runs, but a runner left early before the Vikings could get things going to end the game 7-4 in favor of CBU.
CBU 5, WOU 3
With not much turnaround time, CBU took to the diamond once again, facing Western Oregon. The Wolves managed to keep the Lancers fairly quiet and grab a 2-0 lead after five innings of action.
CBU broke the scoreless streak in the sixth, however. With Mowatt and Miller in scoring position at third and second, Ashley DeVaere sacrificed a fly ball to score Mowatt, cutting the Wolves' lead in half, 2-1. WOU responded in the bottom of the inning, but the two-run cushion didn't last.
After the Wolves grabbed one out, the Lancers loaded up the bases on three-straight walks. Mowatt tied the game at 3-3 as she batted in two of the runners with a single to left and advanced to second as the Wolves tried to make the play at home. Miller stepped up to bat and laid down a perfect bunt to safely reach first and advance both runners, allowing Murphy to put the Lancers in front for the first time. WOU snatched a second out, but CBU had been down two outs before and Mowatt delivered, scoring on a WOU error. The Lancers threatened to add more runs to their tally, but the Wolves ended the inning before CBU could tack on more.
Three outs away from the second win, CBU ended the game as a Wolf left the base too early, giving the Lancers the 5-3 win.
SSU 9, CBU 6
To conclude the long day, the Lancers exploded onto the scene with four runs in the first inning of play. Miller led off with a solo shot over the fence at right center, putting things off to a great start. Then with runners on base, Lopez followed Miller's lead and knocked a home run of her own to give CBU an early 4-0 lead.
CBU extended its lead to 5-0 in the third after Mann scored by tagging at third on a fly ball, but the Seawolves responded back in their next turn at the plate. SSU plated four runs to make things interesting and then followed with another big inning to jump in front 8-5.
Trying not to feel deflated, the Lancers got one of the runs back in the bottom of the fifth to trail by just two. Lopez picked up her fourth RBI by doubling to left center, scoring Kailey Willingham.
The Seawolves added pressure heading into the bottom of the seventh after scoring another run in the top of the frame. CBU tried to rally, but came up short to drop the game 9-6.
CBU closes out the Desert Stinger Saturday with two games, taking on Saint Martin's and St. Cloud State.
