FRESNO, Calif. — In its last regular-season road game, No. 22-ranked California Baptist University came into Fresno prepped and ready to go Thursday night. The Lancers put the heat on late and powered through to a 104-70 victory over Fresno Pacific.
CBU moves to 21-5 overall, 15-4 in the PacWest, with one last regular-season game in just two days. The Sunbirds fall to 9-18 on the season, 5-14 in conference with the loss.
Six hoopsters finished the night in double figures, led by Michael Smith with 19 points on 8-for-9 shooting. He also dished out a team-high six assists, without turning over the ball once.
Eividas Petrulis followed with 17 points, hitting 5-of-7 three-point attempts. Ryan Berg (4-for-6, 3-for-4 3FG) and Taj Spencer (6-for-8) each added 13 points, with Spencer posting a double-double with 13 rebounds as well. Eric Nelson was a perfect 5-for-5 shooting to finish with 11 points and Gelaun Wheelwright rounded out the double-digit scorers with 10 points (3-for-6).
As a team, CBU shot just under 69-percent from the field and an even 60-percent from the perimeter, while keeping FPU to a 31.8 shooting percentage from inside the arc and 22.2 shooting percentage outside the arc.
The Lancers jumped out in front by eight points early, but FPU wasn't going to roll over and cut the margin to just one point at 28-27. Petrulis responded with a deep three-pointer and Spencer followed with an and-one to put the visitors up 34-27.
CBU found its rhythm and went on a 16-2 run, keeping FPU scoreless for over two minutes, to take a 50-31 lead. Wheelwright capped the run with a deep three before the Sunbirds could cut the drought with a free throw. Another free point at the charity stripe for the home team put the score at 51-36 at the break.
Petrulis sank three triples in a row to put CBU teetering toward a 30-point cushion with just over 11 minutes to play. Jordan Giusti completed the feat by driving to the basket to give his team a 79-48 upper hand. Smith kept the run going with a back-to-back layups before FPU could end the spree with two free throws.
Heading down the stretch with a 30-point lead in hand, 92-62, CBU was definitely in control of the game. Nelson put the Lancers into the triple-digit tally mark with a bucket in the paint and Michael Robinson knocked down a three to put a nail in the coffin as the visitors took the game 104-70.
