On the Down Lohr

RIVERSIDE, Calif. – For the second series in a row, California Baptist University is showing it stacks up with the best the NCAA Division II has to offer.
A trend of one-run affairs between the Lancers and ninth-ranked Broncos continued in Friday's non-conference doubleheader at Totman Stadium, with both games going extra innings. CBU won the opener 3-2 on a 10th-inning, two-out walk-off solo homer from Stephen Lohr, while Cal Poly Pomona scratched out a run in the eighth (in a game that was scheduled for seven) to escape with a 1-0 victory.
CBU moves to 6-7 on the year after notching its second win over a top-nine team. The Broncos are now 9-3 with the four-game series finale coming Saturday at Scolinos Field at 11 a.m.
"We just have to keep battling, we have had a couple tough breaksbut we get a swing here and there and we win the game," Lohr said. "We just have to stay with the process."
Lohr batted 4-for-8 with three runs scored and Andy Crowley notched base hits in both games, as well.
Quality pitching dominated both games. Tyson Miller started the opener and went 7 1/3 innings in which he allowed three hits, three walks, two runs and struck out four. Jeremy McDonald was lights out for the Lancers in the second game, throwing 6 2/3 shutout innings. The left-hander allowed just three hits, two walks and struck out 11 batters, which is a career-high in his short time with CBU and a season-high for the team overall.
"McDonald was great," said Lohr, the catcher. "He dominated at the knees all night long. It's just unfortunate we couldn't pull out a win for him."
While Lohr delivered the big blow in the opener, A.J. David did most of the heavy lifting before extra innings rolled around. The junior transfer batted 3-for-4 with two runs batted in for the Lancers.
In the second, David singled through the middle to score Lohr to give CBU a 1-0 lead. Lohr was hit by a pitch to start the inning and Antonio Chavarria moved him to third with a single. In the sixth, David lined a two-out single into left field to cash in Lohr again after the catcher led off the inning with a single.
Austen Zimarik danced out of danger, not allowing a run over the final 2 2/3 innings pitched to earn his first win with CBU. It was all with the help of Lohr, of course, who jumped on a first-pitch fastball in his 10th-inning at-bat.
"I was just trying to trust my abilities and get on," Lohr said. "Thankfully, it went out."
"We were ecstatic, I kind of knew it was coming because Lohr is a big hitter and all, but he just came in clutch at the perfect time," McDonald said. "We loved every minute of that."
McDonald was brilliant in the finale, retiring the side in order in the first and fifth innings. In addition to Lohr's 2-for-4 performance in the game, Crowley, Zack Norris, and Jake Gallaway each had base hits in the loss off Bronco ace Chris Powell.
CBU may expect another dogfight in Saturday's finale with Cal Poly Pomona, but the Lancers are coming out smelling a victory.
"Our mindset is just going out to compete and win," McDonald said. "We can't win the series, so the next thing best is to split it."
