LOS ANGELES, Calif. – In its first game of the new season, California Baptist University showed it could respond to adversity. The Lancers came back from an early deficit to take a lead in the middle of their season opener at Cal State Los Angeles Thursday evening.
Unfortunately for CBU, the Golden Eagles answered and pulled out an 8-2 victory in the 2015 season opener for both squads. CBU will be aiming for revenge Friday night as it hosts CSULA at 6 p.m. on opening day of the year at Totman Stadium. The three-game series ends in Los Angeles on Saturday at noon.
CBU found itself trailing 1-0 after five innings. Brian Ruhm changed that with a solo homer over the fence in the left-center gap to tie the game. From there, a two-out rally ensued starting with a walk to A.J. David and continued when a single from Zack Norris moved the lead runner to third. David was brought home on a wild pitch, as the Lancers took a 2-1 lead.
The Golden Eagles awoke their offense to score seven runs over the sixth and seventh innings to take an 8-2 lead.
David and Norris had multi-hit games in the loss. David, a junior transfer, went 2-for-2 with two walks and a run scored. Norris went 2-for-4, while Andy Crowley, Nathan Antoun and Jake Gallaway also had base hits for the Lancers.
Despite the loss, CBU's offense caused problems for Cal State L.A., as it logged at least one hit in each of the first four innings.
In the top of the first, Andrew Montoya and Crowley reached with a leadoff walk and single, respectively, but the Golden Eagles were able to dance out of danger.
Back-to-back singles from Gallaway and David gave the Lancers two runners on again in the second, but CSULA managed to escape unscathed. Antoun and David singled in the third and fourth, respectively.
