TUCSON, Ariz. — After the earlier games were pushed back in the National Fastpitch Coaches Association Division II Leadoff Classic, No. 23-ranked California Baptist University had to try to patiently wait for its chance at the bat, not hitting the field for more than two hours later than its first game was originally scheduled for.
The Lancers looked to make the most of it, but came up short, dropping their first game of the young season with a 5-3 loss to East Central. With the defeat, CBU falls to 2-1 overall. The Lancers were scheduled for a nightcap, but due to a Tucson city ordinance stating that complex lights cannot be on past 11:00 p.m. local time, the game pinning CBU against the defending NCAA Division II champions, No. 1 West Texas A&M, was canceled.
CBU couldn't quite get things cooking early, finding itself without a hit and down 5-0 in the first three-and-a-half innings. In the bottom of the fourth, Savannah Miller broke that drought with a double to lead off the inning. She sent a blooper toward the gap between second and third, glancing it off the shortstop's glove to reach second safely. Ashley DeVaere also doubled, trading places with Miller for an RBI, but was left stranded to close out the inning.
Back at the plate in the fifth, another leadoff double put the Lancers on base, this time from Tayler Castro. The sophomore then rounded third to come home on an RBI single straight up the middle from Sarah Murphy, putting CBU behind 5-2.
Desperation kicked in, in the Lancers' last chance at bat as they needed three runs to keep the game alive. Pinch hitting, Jenna Lieber gave CBU a big spark with her first collegiate home run to cut the Tigers' cushion to just two runs. CBU ran out of time, however, as ECU grabbed the last outs of the inning to grab the 5-3 win.
"We had chances at the end of the game, but they stopped us," said Baber. "They threw well and made a couple of great plays. We didn't deserve to wi
