OAKLAND, Calif. – For the second game in a row, Antonio Chavarria led California Baptist University's offense in the team's PacWest opener at Academy of Art.
Chavarria went 2-for-3 against Urban Knight ace Nate Gercken, but it was not enough to top the home team in a 4-0 loss at Laney College's field. The Lancers fall to 8-11, 0-1 in conference and Academy of Art improves to 4-13, 2-3. The four-game series continues Friday with a doubleheader slated for a 1 p.m. start.
Adam Hofacket turned in another quality start for CBU, going seven strong innings. The right hander allowed just six base runners (five hits, one walk) and three earned runs. Gercken managed to work his way through the Lancers' lineup, however, notching a complete-game victory.
Brian Ruhm provided CBU's first base hit of the day and Taylor Wetzel continued his hitting this season, with a pinch-hit single in the eighth.
For the second game in a row, Dylan Stowell was called on out of the bullpen and was impressive yet again, allowing just one walk and matching it with a strikeout through an otherwise spotless eighth inning of work.
