ST. LOUIS, Mo. – After entering the 2014-15 season unranked, California Baptist University's Jacob Waste worked his way to a No. 5 ranking in NCAA Division II's 184-pound list.
Not only did the Lancer sophomore become the program's fourth NCAA All-American, but he delivered on that ranking and took fifth in Division II. He capped his season with a revenge 3-2 win over Mercyhurst's Dakota DesLauriers in the fifth-place match Saturday.
Waste faced two familiar foes Saturday. He opened his day in the consolation quarterfinals with Western State Colorado's sixth-ranked Kyle Piatt after it took overtime for Waste to defeat Piatt, 3-2, two weeks ago in Division II Super Region IV Championship.
This time, Waste ended things quickly and took a 4-1 lead with two takedowns in the first period. Two escapes, a takedown and two-point nearfall built his cushion up to 10-3 heading into the third. There was no let up from Waste, as he tallied eight more points, with a takedown, reversal, three-point nearfall and riding time in the third period to secure the 18-6 major decision.
In the consolation semis, Waste faced second-ranked John Vogt of McKendree and nearly pulled out the upset. A first-period takedown gave him a 2-1 lead and he carried a 3-1 edge into the third period after an escape in the second. A minute into the third, Vogt pulled within one with an escape of his own, but it appeared Waste was on his way to the third-place bout. That's until the officials gave Vogt a point with seven seconds left after calling Waste for stalling.
The ruling moved things into overtime, with the first extra frame going by without a score. Vogt pulled out the narrow 5-3 win by scoring a nearfall in the second overtime session.
In the fifth-place finale, Waste took a 3-1 edge into the third period by coming up with an escape and takedown in the second. Eight seconds into the third, DesLauriers pulled within a point with an escape. Waste nearly notched another takedown with about 30 seconds remaining in the match, but DesLauriers was able to block it and force a stalemate. It did not leave him with enough time to overcome Waste, though.
