Sea Lions Shutout

SAN DIEGO, Calif. — Less than 24 hours before its series opener, the NCAA Division II West Region voters ranked Point Loma a spot higher than California Baptist University.
It gave the Lancers something to prove and also foreshadowed what figures to be a tightly-contested series throughout. The four-game set started with a 2-0 CBU victory Thursday, anchored by a complete-game shutout from Adam Hofacket.
The win improves the Lancers, who entered the West Region polls ranked fourth, to 26-17, 18-7 in the PacWest and gave them sole possession of second place in the conference. The Sea Lions, who are ranked third in the region, slide to third place with a 31-11, 17-8 mark. The series continues Friday at 3 p.m. and concludes Saturday with a noon doubleheader.
Hofacket keyed the victory, allowing just four base runners (three hits, one walk) and striking out seven. He retired the side in order in six innings. It started with consecutive 1-2-3 frames in the third and fourth and after the fifth, he did not allow another base runner.
Offensively, CBU was sparked by Luke Navigato's return to the lineup. After missing a few games with an injury, the freshman went 3-for-3 and scored one of the two runs and batted in the other during the game.
Navigato set up the Lancers' first run with a leadoff walk in the top of the seventh. An infield single from Nathan Antoun advanced Navigato to second. A Jake Gallaway sacrifice bunt put both runners in scoring position with one out, and Brian Ruhm coaxed a walk to jam the bases.
Andy Crowley cracked a grounder to second base and Navigato broke for home, scoring to give CBU a huge lift by breaking the scoreless drought.
In the eighth, the Lancers added an insurance run after an Antonio Chavarria leadoff single. He was nearly stranded, as the next two runners were retired. Navigato had other plans, however, sending a shot up the middle to score Chavarria, who went 2-for-3 and also drew two walks in the game.
