GOODYEAR, Ariz. -- There have been a number of notable performances already for California Baptist University's Kavan Eubank and Tuesday, the freshman carded the lowest score of his short career to end the Mustang Intercollegiate.
Eubank shot a four-under-par 68 at the Palm Valley Golf Club to jump from eighth to fourth place in the final individual leaderboard with a five-under total of 211 (72-71-68). It also stands as the fourth best 54-hole tournament total in Lancer history.
"I'm proud of Kavan, he had an excellent ball-striking round," Coach John Hackney said. "If he had the putter going, he could have been seven-deep today."
Not only did Eubank boost his own standing but CBU's overall, as the team moved up to 11th place with a 895 after shooting 293 on the final 18, with the rest of the Lancers combining for their finest round, as well. Host Western New Mexico won its own event with an 861, with the Mustangs' Harry Wetton winning the individual title with a 209.
"I'm very proud of the entire team for having good attitudes and showing heart today," Hackney said. "The course wasn't easy but they battled the entire final round."
All four of CBU's scorers shot 76 or better. Tai Kuida and Christian Sanders had their finest rounds of the event with a 74 and 75, respectively. Greg Gonzalez finished with a 76 to take 18th in the tournament overall with a 220 (73-71-76). Kuida ended up in 57th with a 228 (76-78-74) and Sanders' 236 (80-81-75) put him in 75th.
"Christian had a rough start today, three-over after three holes and fought hard the rest of the round," Hackney said. "He played his last 15 holes even par.
"Tai didn't have his A game today, but showed a lot of heart and carded two-over."
Freshman JJ Qualkenbush capped the finest performance of his young career to take 22nd with a 221 (70-72-79) in individual competition for CBU.
Next up for the Lancers is the PacWest Championships at the Sunbrook Golf Club in St. George, Utah. CBU will have to contend with teams like Dixie State (second, 869) and BYU-Hawaii (12th, 899), who both competed at the Mustang Intercollegiate this week.
