OAKLAND, Calif. – After coming into its final regular-season series with a cushion, California Baptist University is now in a do-or-die situation when it comes to winning its fourth conference championship in five years after a 3-1 loss to Holy Names Monday.
For the Lancers to win the PacWest title, they will need to win the final three games of their regular season and series with the Hawks at Laney College. CBU fell to 29-18, 21-8 in conference with the loss, while Holy Names improved to 20-27, 10-19. Dixie State, which currently leads the PacWest, ended the regular season with a 24-8 conference record.
A.J. David gave the Lancers a perfect start Monday when he blasted a home run over the opposite-field fence in left for a 1-0 lead after the first at-bat of the game. Hawks ace Trent Carrier would bounce back in a big way and held CBU to just four more hits the rest of the way.
David finished the game batting 2-for-3, while Antonio Chavarria went 2-for-4 for the Lancers. Ryan Williams provided CBU's final hit in a pinch-hit situation in the top of the eighth.
The series continues Tuesday with a nine-and-seven inning doubleheader at Laney College, with the first game getting underway at noon. A 7 p.m. Wednesday contest will conclude the regular season for both teams.
