RIVERSIDE--- It is officially that time of year again, with the Major League Baseball Amateur Draft set to begin on Sunday, with countless college and high school baseball players hoping to hear their name called on the biggest stage. The California Baptist Baseball Program is no stranger to the draft, and this year, Nicholas Dumesnil is slated to potentially make history for the CBU Baseball program.
Dumesnil will follow the draft closely from Sunday, July 13th, to Monday, July 14th, during the 20 rounds. The 2025 MLB First-Year Player Draft will take place in Atlanta, Georgia, and be streamed on MLB Network and ESPN. The first through third rounds will begin at 3 p.m. PST on Sunday afternoon, while Monday's rounds will start at 8:30 a.m. PST.
CBU Skipper Gary Adcock boasts a healthy track record in the MLB Draft, tallying 30 draft picks and nine free-agent signings during his 22 years in Riverside. The program itself has seen 41 total draft picks in the last 42 years, with nine former Lancers currently active in professional baseball.
DRAFT PROSPECT
Dumesnil saw another impressive year under the guidance of the CBU baseball staff, adding several accolades to his standout career in a Lancer uniform. The junior outfielder opened his third season in Riverside with several preseason All-American honors after a remarkable summer on the East Coast in the Cape Cod League. Dumesnil was also the second Lancer in history to be named to The Golden Spikes Watch List at the beginning of the season and ranked as high as a First Round Draft Prospect at number 13. He was also named the Western Athletic Conference Preseason Player of the Year and made good on his preseason pressure with a historic season for CBU.
Dumesnil finished his third season with a .360 batting average, complete with 86 hits, 21 doubles, 10 home runs, and 57 RBI. The junior also tallied 27 stolen bases and three triples with a .442 on-base percentage. He also totaled 25 multi-hit and 15 multi-RBI games during the 2025 season and ended his career with a 34-game reached base streak. Dumesnil will finalize his collegiate time with a career .357 batting average with nearly 200 hits, 107 RBI, 45 doubles, 29 home runs, and a .628 slugging percentage. He accumulated two All-WAC First Team awards, was the 2025 WAC Player of the Year, and was an ABCA All-West Region Honoree in 2024.
"I am so proud of Nick. His commitment, hard work, loyalty, accolades, the man he has become at CBU, all of it! Whoever drafts him will get to see what I already know; super athletic, tireless worker, phenomenal baseball player and teammate who will make any organization better," remarked Head Coach Gary Adcock. "No matter the round or pick number, someone is getting a future Major Leaguer! Can't wait to see who is the new team I will be rooting for,".
CBU'S IMPRESSIVE HISTORY
California Baptist currently has eight alumni playing professional baseball within the MiLB and one currently playing with an MLB squad. Tyson Miller became the second Lancer to appear in an MLB game when he started on the mound for the Chicago Cubs in 2020 and currently resides with the Cubs as a reliever, boasting a career 3.87 ERA and is 7-3 in MLB contests.
Miller is the highest draft pick in California Baptist history after he was selected by the Cubs in the fourth round as the 134th overall pick in 2016. The most recent draftee from the 2024 draft was Brandon Downer, who signed a contract with the Baltimore Orioles in the 13th round as the 399th overall pick.
In 14 of the last 15 years, at least one Lancer has been selected in the MLB Draft. The only exception was during the 2020 pandemic when the MLB Draft was reduced to five rounds, but CBU did see one of its recruits drafted in the fifth round at 158th overall.
