MESA, AZ--- The California Baptist baseball program's 2025 season came to a close on Tuesday evening during the first round of the Western Athletic Conference. An extra inning affair saw the eight-seeded Utah Tech come away with a 6-5 win to continue on in the tournament, while five-seeded CBU finishes the season 30-27.
Despite getting an early lead, a sluggish bullpen from the Lancers ultimately led to the loss after Utah Tech rallied to tie the game after CBU starter Cody New left the game. New posted six innings of work with just three hits and one run, while tallying seven strikeouts to finish his season with 98 Ks and a 3.49 ERA. Small ball put the Lancers on the board in the opening third of the game with RBI singles from Matt Chavez and Julian Alvarez, and the Trailblazers responded with the same in the seventh inning to tie the game. Utah Tech snagged their first lead of the game in the eighth, but CBU responded in the bottom of the inning to tie the game again before a pair of scoreless frames.
The Trailblazers finally managed to break through CBU's defense in the top of the eleventh with a pair of runs, and despite putting themselves in a scoring position with two on, the comeback could not be completed for the Lancers. Nicholas Dumesnil wowed with an extremely impressive night at the plate after going four-for-five with a double and a run to end his 2025 season. Alvarez also finished his collegiate career on a high with three hits and an RBI.
The loss to Utah Tech marks CBU's third time losing its first-round game at the WAC Tournament, moving the Lancers to a 4-5 overall record in the postseason. This was the first time California Baptist had ever faced Utah Tech in the postseason.
California Baptist completes the season with Dumesnil as their offensive leader after the junior finished with a .360 batting average, ten home runs, 86 hits, 21 doubles, and 27 stolen bases. Just behind was the WAC Freshman of the Year in Chris Ramirez, who finished his collegiate debut with a .350 batting average and 71 hits on 30 RBI. From the mound, New ends his sophomore season as the go-to guy from the CBU pitching staff with a sub-3.50 ERA and a 6-3 pitching record. Ryan Kittredge returned for his junior year and emerged as a reliable starter for the Lancers as well, posting a 4.62 ERA and 54 strikeouts on 76 innings this season.
As a team, the Lancers end the season with eight series wins and a 21-13 home record, while posting a 9-11 away record. CBU also totaled two sweeps in the 2025 season. Skipper Gary Adcock moves to a 763-413-1 career record as the head coach of the California Baptist Baseball program.
