LA VERNE, Calif. – After starting the season against two of the top three ranked teams in the NCAA, California Baptist University was anxious to gets new Coach Kevin Rosa his first wins with the program.
The Lancers did so by knocking off two top-10 ranked NCAA Division III squads Saturday to even their record to 2-2 on the year. Sixth-ranked Pomona-Pitzer and No. 10 La Verne fell to CBU on respective scores of 13-5 and 15-10. The Leopards and Sagehens start the year with identical 1-2 records.
From here, CBU prepares for two home games next week against eighth-ranked UC Irvine and Claremont-Mudd-Scripps, which is receiving votes in the NCAA top-20, on Wednesday and Friday, respectively. Both games are scheduled for 7 p.m. starts.
Brent Teraoka, Christopher Forte and Tucker Angelo all finished tied for the team high in goals, with six each, on the day. Forte and Teraoka logged hat tricks in each game, while Angelo scored four goals against Pomona-Pitzer.
David Ring got on the board in each game, ending with three goals on the day, for the Lancers. Clint Walling provided an all-around performance in the pool, with seven steals, three assists and two goals.
The Lancers came out and took a 6-2 lead on La Verne by the end of the first quarter. The Leopards pulled within three, 8-5, at halftime but CBU pulled away with a 5-1 run in the third to take a 12-6 advantage.
Teraoka and Forte led the way in the game, with three goals and multiple assists. Angelo, Ring and Spencer Shore each scored twice, while Walling forced four turnovers, scored and assisted for CBU. Ryan Penney drew two ejections and added a goal and assist in the contest.
In the finale with Pomona-Pitzer, CBU put things away even quicker. The Lancers enjoyed a 7-1 run in the first half and outscored the Sagehens 3-2 in both of the final two quarters. While Angelo, Teraoka and Forte led the way scoring goals, freshman Royce Daniel Laverne was the leading assist man with four dimes in the game. Angelo and Walling each had two assists, as well, while Walling forced three more turnovers.
